In 2018 I stopped buying deodorant from the shops. I avoid that spray-stuff anyway as it can't be good for the planet anyhow. So, I stopped buying deodorant for two main reasons.

Firstly it started to get a little pricey and only bought when on special offer was getting tricky. Also I read the ingredients one day and then thought about "what I am putting on my skin?" It may smell ok, help a little with the sweat, but it is healthy?

I started to feel a little uncomfortable about the ingredients in the shop-bought deodorant. So I started to do some research on the internet and thought, you know what I am going to make my own. It can't be that difficult surely...

I started off trying a few recipes that I came across on YouTube and on some blogs. I must of made them incorrectly as they just was not kind to my skin. So I started to be brave and play around with ingredients and formulate something to suited me.

After many tries and a year later I think I've formulated a recipe that is simple to make, easy to whip-up when needed and feels great on my skin.

So I thought I will share my homemade roll-on deodorant recipe.

My roll-on deodorant recipe

Ingredients

30ml Witch hazel

12g Sodium bicarbonate

3g Arrowroot powder

5g Sweet almond oil

5g Polysorbate-80

2g Vitamin E oil

2ml Essential oils

Method

Clean my work area and even though this product is for my personal use I still ensure all the equipment is cleaned and wiped down with isopropyl alcohol to make it extra clean.

Firstly I dissolve the sodium bicarbonate with the witch hazel. I do not like the grainy feel of the sodium bicarbonate, for me it can irritate my armpits. I am making a double batch this time so my images will show double the amount to what's listed in the ingredients.

Once the sodium bicarbonate is dissolved I add in the powdered arrowroot and stir well. I place the heatproof beaker into the a bain-marie, continually stirring until the mixture slightly thickens and at this point I remove from the heat.

I then add in the glycerine and sweet almond oil, stir really well to ensure the mixture is mixed through.

Once cool to touch (about 35 degrees) I add in polysorbate-80 and vitamin E oil. Here I give it all a really good stir ensuring everything is mixed. I use polysorbate-80 as it helps the oils mix in with the liquid mixture better. In my early attempts, after a while I found the oil eventually starts to sit on the top of the deodorant liquid mixture.

To complete the mixture it's time to add in the essential oils. It's here you can personalise it to your taste. I enjoy a fresh clean scent and go for a blend of eucalyptus and grapefruit essential oil with the couple of drops of peppermint. You don't want to overdo the peppermint as it can be quite irritating on the skin. Now give everything a good final stir.

All is left to do is pour into a cleaned container. I'm using old roll-on deodorant container that I pulled apart carefully, washed, cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Fill it up with the mixture, carefully add the roller parts back and the lid back. All done.

I give my deodorant a little shake before I use it.

Feel free to give this ago and tweak the recipe to suite your skin and preference. Add a comment below letting me know how it went for you and do share any top tips with me to help me improve my homemade deodorant recipe.
